Byron Bay - ByronStay Accommodation

ByronStay is the result of ten years work and part of our process of moving to Byron Bay and the Far North Coast. ByronStay means a lot to us and it provides us with a number of important things including:-
  • Job Satisfaction - a major step towards self sufficiency and becoming our own boss.
  • Security - in the knowledge we don't rely on any corporation for our income
  • Peace - in the freedom that an income producing holiday home in paradise provides
  • Pleasure - from the privilege of being able to offer our holiday home as a base and comfortable haven to others so they can enjoy Byron Bay and the area as we do
  • Joy - from the smiles and comments received from happy and satisfied guests who return home revitalized and nourished - in the way a holiday should
  • Delight - when our regular guests tell us "your beachouse is our beachouse"
  • Contentment - only the pleasure of sharing can bring

Our Beachouse is Your Beachouse

How did ByronStay come about?

When we first decided to move here almost 10 years ago, Byron Bay was in a lot of ways, a very different place. It was already undergoing a transformation and rebirth.

The town was transforming itself from a sleepy surfer and hippy hangout which attracted some visitors during the summer months - to a hip and happening 21st century holiday destination and a highly desirable place to move to.

We loved the area and visited often and longed for the day we could move up permanently, thinking probably it would be when we reached retirement age, so we tried to be patient for when (if) that fateful day would come. Then we thought 'hang that!! Lets start the ball rolling now !!"

And so we started the process of moving up to the Northern Rivers - but we started slowly, and cautiously - testing the water to see how we go - a weekender.

We didn't want to be another statistic and casualty of the sea-change dream, arriving here full of optimism and dreams for a new life away from the big smoke with all it's traffic and pollution and everything we, the human race detest about living in a big city - only to be forced to retreat sheepishly back to the steady income and job security and everything the human race need from those same concrete jungles.

Meetings were arranged, bank managers wooed, a city house remortaged and that dream escape on 5 acres acquired - not in, or anywhere near Byron Bay mind you, the sweet-talking of the Bank manager hadn't worked well enough to be able to afford that - but well enough to allow weekend habitation of a gorgeous 5 acre block in the picturesque hinterland, in the lush green area known as Nashua, some 30 minutes scenic drive south-west of Byron Bay..

It was a magnificent place, an old wooden Queenslander, with dark wood panel walls, stone fireplace, wide open balconies and views on all sides. We would sit on the balcony each evening, well earned beer in hand and watch as the sun sank behind the Nightcap Range mountains, then listen to the chorus of cicadas and frogs welcoming the night before we all settled down for the evening and looked forward to the sound of the train south along the railway line in the valley below, 10.25 every evening, once a day north, once a day south, heading from Byron Bay to Sydney via Lismore. We would wander out most nights and watch it's lights winding their way romantically through the countryside. Our view was often partially obscured by the mist that would settle in the valley, adding even more romance and mystic to the occasion and reconfirming our belief we were in paradise. Paradise for the weekend anyway, before heading back to Sydney and reality come Monday.

The more weekends we spent there, the more we yearned to stay longer, maybe even permanently. That dream seemed far, far away. The trouble with paradise is the lack of jobs and opportunities, and the reduced flow handed out to the few lucky enough to find such an oasis in this barren desert. So we resigned ourselves to accepting our weekday detention in the city and looked forward to our weekend escapes and the day when the weekend would have no end.
Then luck paid a visit by way of a job offer slapbang in the very desired town itself that was too good to refuse and the permanent move north came about a lot quicker than anyone could have anticipated.

Trouble in Paradise

Everything went smoothly and the much appreciated permanent move north was welcomed and many blissful months were spent at Nashua before the cracks started to appear.

Much as we loved our queenslander in Nashua and the gorgeous countryside that welcomed us each morning, the 30 minute commute between Byron Bay and Nashua every day started to become a chore. The scenic drive meandering through the rolling green hills of the Byron Bay hinterland, the seemingly endless bends and the mysterious corners of undiscovered natural beauty that had at one time charmed and delighted us - now felt like an unnecessary daily effort. Whoever knew familiarity could breed such contempt? We had originally made the migration north to enjoy not just the beautiful countryside, but also another of it's stunning attractions - those Byron Bay Beaches!! - which were always 30 minutes away, that's an hour long round trip every time we wanted a swim in the ocean.

Slowly but surely the decision was reluctantly made to search out a new home closer to work, the beach and main object of our desires and let go of our big old queenslander with it's wide balconies, open fireplace and romanticized 2 trains a day - oh hang one - the government stopped those trains a few years ago anyway so scrap that last sentimental memory, that loss wasn't self-inflicted - where was I ? oh yes, and occasional glimpses of heaven.

The pain of this loss was quickly eased when 17 Childe Street at Belongil Beach came into view as a possible replacement. Belongil was still considered an ugly duckling - a mere 7 years ago - hard to believe now but there you go - and very lucky it was for us too - so in we moved and spent many a day burning ourselves to a crisp on Belongil Beach and whiling away the hours at the Belongil Beach cafe before wandering aimlessly into town along the beach to take in a movie or have a beer at the top pub, before crawling home again. It was during this hedonistic, indulgent time that ByronStay was conceived and born in the form of Absolutely Belongil Treehouse The unique layout of the property with 2 separate buildings meant the birth of the Treehouse was a relatively easy initiation into the holiday accommodation business and a very successful venture. The seed was planted..

This blissful way of life could have went on forever but fate had other plans in the way of restructuring, downsizing, re-evaluating and redundancy packages which led to the fulfillment of another dream of owning and running a farm, a real farm, with tractors and geese and everything, by way of Clovelly Grove .

This new farm, not a pretend farm or hobby farm but the genuine article meant reluctantly saying goodbye to Belongil Beach and moving on - unless? - what if? - couldn't we nurture our newborn accommodation venture and add to it and possibly be able to hang on to Belongil for a little longer to come back to once the new farm had lost it's charm? - and so Absolutely Belongil Beach House and later Absolutely Belongil Beach Hut were born.

And that is the tale of how ByronStay came to be.
